IBM has completed a major core banking modernization initiative with Philippine National Bank (PNB), helping the bank strengthen operational resilience, improve processing efficiency, and modernize its mission-critical infrastructure.

The two-year project was delivered in partnership with Croatian consulting firm CROZ and led by IBM Expert Labs. The modernization upgraded PNB’s core banking environment from IBM z/VSE on z14 systems to the more advanced IBM z/OS platform running on the IBM z16 architecture.

As part of the upgrade, PNB also implemented IBM Resource Access Control Facility (RACF) to strengthen mainframe security and improve system controls amid growing regulatory and cybersecurity demands in the banking industry.

According to PNB, the modernization delivered measurable operational gains after deployment. Production slowdowns, which previously occurred twice monthly, were completely eliminated. Nightly end-of-day pre-processing validation time was reduced from five hours to two hours, while batch processing duration dropped by nearly 75%, from 13 hours to only three hours.

The improvements allow PNB’s IT teams to spend less time on overnight monitoring and troubleshooting while increasing focus on strategic initiatives and digital innovation.

Constantino Yap, Senior Vice President and Group Head for Digital Channel Management and Innovation at PNB, said maintaining reliable and resilient banking operations remains critical as customer expectations and regulatory requirements continue to evolve.

Meanwhile, Leo Capinpin, Country General Manager and Technology Leader of IBM Philippines, said the project demonstrates how financial institutions in the Philippines can modernize critical infrastructure while maintaining security, stability, and operational continuity.

The initiative also included phased deployment, risk management strategies, and knowledge transfer programs to equip PNB’s internal teams with the skills needed to independently manage and further develop the upgraded environment.

The project highlights the growing focus among banks on digital transformation, cybersecurity, and infrastructure modernization as financial institutions adapt to increasing transaction volumes, evolving compliance standards, and rising customer demand for always-on banking services.
