Mapúa University, in collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU), is advancing the use of artificial intelligence in medical education, highlighting how Generative AI can support personalized learning, clinical simulations, and more inclusive training for future healthcare professionals.
The universities showcased their AI-enabled education initiatives at the Towards Unity for Health (TUFH) 2026 International Conference in Manila, where global academic and healthcare leaders discussed technology and social innovations aimed at building more responsive and resilient health systems.

AI transforms medical learning
Mapúa University School of Medicine demonstrated how it is integrating Generative AI into its academic environment through AI-assisted course design and active learning. Faculty members and incoming students are required to complete a 10-hour, self-paced prompt engineering course developed by ASU before classes begin, giving them foundational skills for using AI effectively and responsibly.
According to Mapúa, AI tools can reduce the time required to develop instructional materials while enabling more personalized learning experiences. Medical students can also use AI-generated patient profiles to simulate clinical diagnostic dialogues, providing interactive alternatives to conventional lecture-based instruction.
The university also showcased AI-supported learning activities, including escape room simulations focused on infectious disease outbreaks and study materials designed for visual, auditory, and text-based learners. One activity, “Discovery in the Dark,” was co-designed with a visually impaired patient to help medical students develop empathy and a deeper understanding of accessibility.
Mapúa also highlighted MapúaMedX, a digital-ready healthcare initiative that uses AI as a collaborative tool to address gaps in faculty capacity, resources, and access to technology while promoting responsible and ethical AI use.
Technology meets social accountability
Beyond AI, TUFH 2026 highlighted Mapúa-led efforts to make medical education more responsive to community needs through LAKAS (Leading Alliances for Knowledge Advancement and Social Accountability).
The national community of practice brings together 12 Philippine medical schools to integrate social accountability, quality assurance, mentoring, and institutional self-assessment into medical education. Among the initiatives presented were Bukidnon State University’s collaboration with indigenous leaders to develop culturally sensitive medical training and Cebu Normal University’s graduate tracking system.
The initiatives demonstrate how technology and institutional collaboration can complement medical training by preparing future doctors to respond to healthcare challenges in underserved communities.
Mapúa said the combined focus on AI-enabled learning and social accountability reflects a broader shift toward medical education that is not only clinically competent but also inclusive, technology-enabled, culturally sensitive, and aligned with the health needs of Filipinos.
