The Space Business Innovation Camp (SBIC) 2026 panel discussion during Philippine Space Week in August brought together experts from government, industry, and the startup sector to explore how space data and satellite technologies can address real-world challenges and open new business opportunities.
The discussion highlighted the growing potential of satellite-derived data as a technology resource for businesses, particularly when combined with other datasets to develop practical solutions for different industries.
The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) is expanding efforts to build the country’s space economy by helping startups and businesses use satellite-derived data to develop products, improve operations, and address industry challenges.
Through targeted capacity-building programs, PhilSA is teaching businesses how to combine satellite data with information such as demographic statistics, transportation, energy consumption, and socioeconomic data. These combined datasets can help companies identify market opportunities, optimize services, and create solutions tailored to specific business needs.
“We want innovators to see satellite data not as something distant or highly specialized, but as a building block—one that can be combined with existing technologies and local knowledge to solve real problems,” said PhilSA Acting Director General Gay Jane P. Perez, Ph.D.
A key initiative is the Space Business Innovation Camp (SBIC), a seven-week online mentoring program designed to help participants turn business concepts into satellite-enabled solutions. The program covers problem-solution fit, market understanding, and value proposition development, with participants demonstrating viable ideas given opportunities to pitch before funding and industry experts.
Beyond business development, SBIC can connect participants with potential research and development partners, startup funding programs, and incubation or acceleration opportunities.
PhilSA is also engaging space-adjacent industries in exploring the local manufacturing and production of technical components for space assets. The agency said strengthening private-sector capabilities can help expand the country’s pool of space-related enterprises while creating opportunities for innovation, investment, and employment.
Through these efforts, PhilSA is positioning space data and technology as practical tools for Philippine businesses, supporting the development of a stronger domestic space ecosystem.
