The Esports Foundation (EF) has unveiled a new wildcard slot framework for the Esports Nations Cup 2026 (ENC), introducing structured qualification pathways designed to increase global participation in nation-based esports competitions.
The new system includes Solidarity Slots, Host Region Slots, and Special Invites, aimed at addressing technical, structural, and regional barriers that often limit access to international esports events. The initiative seeks to broaden representation while maintaining competitive integrity across all ENC titles.
A key component of the framework is the Solidarity Slot program, which provides underrepresented countries and territories with a performance-based route to compete on the global stage. Available for all game titles except Counter-Strike 2, the program will accept applications from eligible nations between July 20 and August 17, with selections based on competitive strength and regional representation.
The ENC also introduced a Host Region Slot for 2026, ensuring participation from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member nations through a merit-based qualification process. The highest-performing GCC nation that has not already qualified will earn the slot.
Meanwhile, Special Invites will be used in selected titles to overcome technical or operational challenges that may prevent teams from participating through standard qualification pathways. These invitations will be determined by publisher and ecosystem requirements rather than competitive performance.
Titles receiving additional wildcard allocations include Chess, EA SPORTS FC, PUBG MOBILE, Honor of Kings, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and Rocket League. All other game titles, excluding Counter-Strike 2, will receive one Solidarity Slot by default.
According to Fabian Scheuermann, Chief Games Officer of the Esports Foundation, the initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to creating more opportunities for esports talent worldwide. The framework aims to help emerging esports nations gain international exposure and inspire future generations of players.
Wildcard participants will receive full travel and accommodation support and compete under the same conditions as all qualified teams at the ENC Finals, reinforcing the tournament’s focus on inclusivity and global competitive growth.
