PLDT Enterprise has expanded its portfolio of cybersecurity solutions with the launch of SmartSafe RoamStatus, a GSMA Open Gateway-certified API that helps businesses detect potential fraud by verifying whether a customer’s mobile device is roaming locally or overseas during online transactions.

Developed by Smart Communications, the solution marks another milestone for the company after becoming the first Philippine telecommunications provider to receive GSMA Open Gateway certification for Number Verification APIs. The new Device Roaming Status API builds on that achievement, adding contextual network intelligence to strengthen digital authentication without requiring additional action from users.
Unlike traditional identity verification, SmartSafe RoamStatus uses real-time mobile network signals to determine if a device is roaming and returns a simple yes-or-no response without revealing a user’s location. This allows banks, e-commerce platforms, and other digital service providers to identify suspicious transactions, trigger additional security checks when necessary, and reduce fraud while protecting customer privacy.
The API complies with GSMA Open Gateway and CAMARA open-source standards, ensuring interoperability, security, and compatibility across mobile networks worldwide. According to GSMA, more than 300 mobile networks representing over 80% of global mobile connections are now aligned with the Open Gateway initiative, enabling developers and enterprises to deploy trusted network capabilities at scale.
PLDT Enterprise said SmartSafe RoamStatus is part of its broader SmartSafe security portfolio, which will also include SmartSafe NetIdentity, SmartSafe GeoCheck, and SmartSafe KYCPlus. Together, these network-powered APIs are designed to help organizations strengthen digital trust, enhance fraud prevention, and accelerate secure digital transformation using Smart’s nationwide mobile network.
