PLDT Inc. said it remains confident in its network leadership position and is open to competition, even as reports point to the possible entry of satellite connectivity providers in the Philippine market this year.

During a recent earnings press conference, PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head Menardo “Butch” G. Jimenez emphasized that the company is closely monitoring potential new entrants, particularly satellite direct-to-cell providers, but is not threatened by them at this stage.

“We take competition seriously,” Jimenez said, noting that PLDT’s strategy is to continuously strengthen its capabilities while responding decisively to new players. He added that competing with new entrants is often easier than competing with established players, underscoring PLDT’s proactive approach to market shifts.

Jimenez also offered a cautious assessment of current direct-to-cell satellite technology, pointing to real-world limitations such as delayed messaging speeds and limited suitability for data-heavy applications. However, he acknowledged that the technology is expected to improve over time.

The executive said satellite services may still play a useful role in specific use cases such as redundancy and connectivity in remote areas, but stressed that everyday users demand fast and reliable service—an area where PLDT and its mobile arm Smart Communications continue to maintain strong nationwide coverage of about 97% of the population.

Looking ahead, PLDT said it is prepared to evolve alongside emerging technologies while welcoming healthy competition. Jimenez added that the company is ready to “slug it out” if needed, reinforcing its commitment to defending its market position while improving services for Filipino consumers.
