Smart Communications’ activation of a new cell site in San Vicente, Palawan reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding reliable mobile connectivity in support of the government’s push to bring internet access to more Filipinos living in last-mile and underserved communities.
PLDT wireless unit Smart Communications has expanded its mobile network in Palawan with the activation of a new cell site in San Vicente, strengthening internet connectivity in one of the country’s geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).
The new tower is designed to provide faster and more reliable mobile services, supporting digital inclusion by giving residents better access to online education, livelihood opportunities, government services, and digital innovation.
According to PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head Menardo G. Jimenez, the initiative aligns with the government’s goal of extending reliable internet connectivity to underserved communities while highlighting the importance of collaboration between the private sector and government agencies.
The new network site also supports the government’s Bayanihan SIM initiative. During the launch, Smart and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) distributed around 1,500 free SIM cards with prepaid load to qualified beneficiaries, including students. Recipients will receive 25GB of mobile data every month for one year through government funding.
To further promote digital learning, PLDT-Smart Foundation donated a School-in-a-Bag package to Old Caruray Elementary School. The portable digital classroom includes a teacher’s laptop, 10 learning tablets loaded with Department of Education curriculum-based content, a Smart Bro LTE Pocket Wi-Fi device, and expandable storage.
The deployment forms part of the PLDT Group’s ongoing investments in strengthening its integrated fixed and wireless network infrastructure to improve digital connectivity and deliver better customer experiences across the Philippines.
