The 2026 WNBA season has reached its halfway point, with emerging contenders, expansion teams, injury challenges, and a competitive MVP race shaping the league’s biggest storylines ahead of the All-Star Game.
The league expanded this season with the addition of the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire, bringing new franchises into the WNBA landscape. Both teams are still adjusting to the competition, entering the midseason break with records of 10-16 and 11-15, respectively. However, recent expansion success from teams like the Golden State Valkyries, which currently rank among the league’s top teams, shows that new franchises can quickly become competitive.
One of the biggest challenges of the 2026 campaign has been player injuries. More than 170 injury cases have been reported during the first half of the season, with players missing a combined 644 games. The increase in injuries has been linked to the league’s expanded schedule and heavier workload as the WNBA continues to grow.
The biggest turnaround story so far belongs to the Dallas Wings, which have transformed from last season’s bottom-ranked team into a playoff contender. With a 17-9 record at the halfway mark, Dallas has benefited from rookie standout Azzi Fudd, improved performances from Paige Bueckers, and the impact of new head coach Jose Fernandez.
On the other side, the Phoenix Mercury have struggled after reaching last season’s championship series. The team entered the break with a 9-18 record, affected by the departure of Satou Sabally to the New York Liberty and difficulties replacing last season’s scoring production.
In the MVP race, A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces remains the leading candidate after averaging 25.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. The four-time MVP continues to dominate on both ends of the court and remains a strong contender for another league award.
Dallas star Paige Bueckers is emerging as Wilson’s biggest challenger, improving across major statistical categories while helping lead the Wings’ resurgence. Meanwhile, Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles has become the early favorite for Rookie of the Year after averaging 19.6 points, six assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game.
The season’s next major event is the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game, scheduled for July 25 at the United Center in Chicago. The event will celebrate the league’s 30th anniversary, with Hall of Famers Cynthia Cooper and Teresa Weatherspoon serving as honorary team general managers.
With the playoff race entering its decisive stage after the All-Star break, the second half of the WNBA season is expected to deliver more competition, breakout performances, and key moments as teams chase championship contention.
