Maya is combining the Philippine National ID system with artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to make financial onboarding faster while maintaining identity verification and regulatory safeguards.

The digital financial services provider has integrated National ID eVerify, the Philippine Statistics Authority’s identity-verification service, into its onboarding process. Eligible customers can upgrade their accounts by entering their National ID number instead of photographing or uploading a physical ID.

Maya then verifies customer information against government-held National ID records and completes the process through a video selfie. If additional information is required, customers are asked only to provide the missing details. Those who cannot be verified through National ID eVerify can still use the regular ID-upload process without restarting their application.

Behind the process, Maya uses agentic AI and automation to handle repetitive KYC (Know Your Customer) tasks. The technology helps validate information, identify potential duplicate accounts, conduct required checks and route exceptions to human reviewers.

The approach has delivered measurable results, with Maya reporting an 84% improvement in overall turnaround time for consumer onboarding. The company said the efficiency gains allow employees to focus more on investigations, exceptions and cases requiring human judgment.

The technology was showcased at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) AI Summit, where Maya was among three companies invited to demonstrate AI applications in the Philippine financial sector.

Maya Chief Technology Officer Alfred Lo said combining National ID infrastructure with AI and automation can reduce customer friction while keeping verification robust and scalable.

The development comes as the BSP has proposed requiring supervised financial institutions to integrate with National ID authentication services for customer due diligence and identity verification, potentially expanding the technology’s role across the financial sector.

Maya said its National ID-first onboarding is part of a broader AI-first strategy that also applies machine learning, decision engines, behavioral scoring, anomaly detection and intelligent automation to areas including credit, fraud management, customer care and operations.
