Brand rights holders attended a brand protection bootcamp organized by Shopee Philippines to strengthen IP protection in e-commerce. The e-commerce platform also hosted a panel discussion joined by (second from left) Atty. Kristian Nico Acosta, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Cosmic Technologies, Inc.; Atty. Christine Pangilinan-Canlapan, Supervising Director of IPOPHL’s IP Rights Enforcement Office; and Shopee Head of Commercial Jack Ng.

As the Philippine digital economy expands, Shopee Philippines is strengthening efforts to protect intellectual property (IP) and build trust in the country’s growing e-commerce sector.

The company recently held its Brand Protection Bootcamp, bringing together representatives from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), brand owners, and industry partners to discuss practical ways of addressing IP infringement in the digital marketplace.

A key technology featured during the bootcamp was Shopee’s Brand Portal, a self-service platform that allows rights holders to report suspected IP violations through a structured process. The platform forms part of Shopee’s broader approach to helping brands protect their products and intellectual property online.

The initiative comes as the Philippine digital economy reaches P2.74 trillion, contributing nearly 10 percent of the country’s GDP. E-commerce accounts for more than 32 percent of the sector and supports over 75 percent of digital economy jobs.

IPOPHL Deputy Director General Nathaniel Arevalo highlighted the need for a whole-of-society approach to IP protection, involving government agencies, businesses, platforms, and rights holders.

Beyond reporting counterfeit listings, Shopee said its brand protection efforts also include proactive detection capabilities and seller accountability measures. The company continues to work with brands and government agencies through its E-Commerce Memorandum of Understanding with IPOPHL, which Shopee joined as an original signatory in 2021.

Shopee Philippines Head of Commercial Jack Ng said protecting IP has become increasingly important as e-commerce evolves into a primary channel for brand discovery, customer engagement, and business growth.

The company said it will continue collaborating with IPOPHL, brand owners, and industry partners to strengthen online IP protection and support a more trusted digital marketplace.
