Smart expands satellite phone tests to Batangas

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and Lynk Global have expanded their Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite service testing to Batangas, exploring how satellite connectivity can keep mobile communications running when terrestrial networks are disrupted during disasters.

The latest tests build on earlier trials in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte and are designed to demonstrate how satellite-enabled connectivity can support emergency communications in areas affected by calamities.

Satellite connectivity for disaster response

Smart’s Network Strategy and Architecture Team, together with Lynk, simulated disaster scenarios where cellular infrastructure could become temporarily unavailable. The tests demonstrated the potential of satellite-enabled cell broadcast technology to send emergency alerts and public safety messages directly to customers using standard mobile phones.

Spearheaded by Smart’s Network Strategy and Architecture team with Lynk, the service tests explored satellite connectivity that can deliver critical communications when terrestrial networks are unavailable, helping strengthen national disaster response.

Smart and Lynk Global’s expansion of their Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite service tests to Batangas builds on successful pilot activities conducted earlier this year in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte.

The technology is also being tested for two-way SMS communication, which could allow users to send vital messages when terrestrial cell towers are unavailable because of typhoons, power outages or other emergencies.

“Reliable communication is essential in times of crisis,” said Menardo G. Jimenez Jr., PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head. He said PLDT and Smart are investing in technologies that can help ensure critical information reaches communities when needed.

Addressing mobile dead zones

Beyond disaster response, D2D satellite connectivity could help extend mobile coverage to rural, underserved and hard-to-reach areas, as well as support remote workers, maritime travelers and fishermen operating in areas without conventional cellular coverage.

Unlike specialized satellite phones, D2D technology is designed to work with existing standard mobile phones, potentially expanding access to connectivity without requiring customers to purchase dedicated satellite devices.

The Batangas tests are part of Smart and Lynk’s continuing efforts to explore satellite technology as a complement to conventional telecommunications infrastructure and strengthen communications resiliency across the Philippines.
