Commuters on the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) can now pay fares using Mastercard credit, debit, and prepaid cards, as well as eligible mobile wallets linked to Mastercard cards, bringing faster and more convenient cashless travel to Metro Manila passengers.

The new contactless payment option allows riders to access designated Fast Lanes without the need to purchase or reload tickets. The rollout expands LRT-2’s existing digital payment options, which include mobile NFC payments, bank cards, and GCash Commute QR.

Mastercard said the initiative supports the modernization of public transportation by enabling secure, interoperable, and convenient fare collection systems. The technology allows commuters to use existing payment methods while benefiting from contactless security features designed to protect transactions.

“Public transportation is part of everyday life for millions of Filipinos, and paying for a ride should be just as effortless,” said Jason Crasto, Mastercard’s Country Manager for the Philippines.

The contactless payment capability also supports NFC-enabled Android devices with compatible issuer mobile wallets, providing commuters with more payment choices. Each transaction is protected by Mastercard’s security technologies, helping deliver a reliable and efficient payment experience.

The launch is part of Mastercard’s broader efforts to expand open-loop transit payments worldwide, allowing passengers to use existing bank cards and mobile devices instead of separate transport tickets. In the Philippines, the company continues to collaborate with transit operators and financial partners to improve digital payment access and enhance everyday mobility.
