PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications are expanding mobile network coverage and SIM activation initiatives to bring digital connectivity to underserved and unserved communities across the Philippines through the government-led Bayanihan SIM program.

Smart has activated network sites serving geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) in Argao, Cebu; Matalam, Cotabato; Talakag, Bukidnon; Silago, Southern Leyte; and San Vicente, Palawan. The expanded coverage aims to support education, agriculture, local businesses, and government service delivery.

To provide connectivity while permanent infrastructure is being deployed, Smart is also using interim solutions such as femtocells and satellite connectivity in selected unserved areas.

The company is complementing network expansion with community-based SIM registration assistance, activation campaigns, and device raffle promotions to encourage beneficiaries to use their distributed SIM cards and access digital services.

Smart has distributed more than 422,000 SIM cards across 152 underserved and unserved sites nationwide through the Bayanihan SIM program. The initiative is supported by PLDT’s fiber infrastructure and Smart’s mobile network, combining fixed and wireless connectivity to extend digital access to remote communities.

PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head Menardo G. Jimenez Jr. emphasized that connectivity must translate into meaningful digital participation, highlighting the importance of helping Filipinos make use of available online opportunities.

The initiative forms part of the PLDT Group’s ongoing network modernization and expansion efforts, with temporary connectivity solutions supporting immediate needs while new sites are developed for longer-term service.

By extending mobile coverage and supporting SIM activation, PLDT and Smart aim to help more Filipinos access digital services, educational resources, economic opportunities, and government transactions.
