Modern research is shedding new light on the connection between the body’s internal clock and digestive health, reinforcing traditional wellness practices long observed across Asia. Experts now say that aligning eating habits, sleep patterns, and daily routines with the body’s circadian rhythm could significantly improve gut health and overall wellbeing.
According to health experts, the digestive system operates on a biological schedule influenced by the circadian clock — a 24-hour internal timing system that regulates sleep, metabolism, immunity, and digestion. Scientists have found that gut bacteria communicate closely with this body clock, affecting metabolism, insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular health, and even stress response.

Recent studies also suggest that disruptions caused by modern lifestyles — including irregular meal schedules, late-night screen time, shift work, and poor sleep — may negatively impact gut bacteria and increase risks of inflammation, weight gain, and blood sugar imbalance.
In line with World Digestive Health Day, Dr. Vipada Sae-Lao, Nutrition Education and Training Lead for Asia Pacific at Herbalife, emphasized the importance of balanced nutrition, proper hydration, quality sleep, and stress management to restore gut-body clock balance.
Experts recommend eating nutrient-dense meals within a consistent eight to 12-hour eating window, staying hydrated throughout the day, and avoiding heavy meals before bedtime. Stress reduction also plays a critical role, as cortisol can disrupt both gut health and circadian rhythms.
As health technology and nutritional science continue to evolve, researchers are increasingly highlighting circadian-based wellness strategies as a practical approach to improving long-term digestive and metabolic health.
