Global cybersecurity company Kaspersky is urging Filipinos to be more vigilant when using public WiFi networks, warning that cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting unsecured connections to steal personal data, intercept credentials, and distribute malware.

The advisory follows recent guidance from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which cautioned the public against accessing sensitive services such as banking apps over public WiFi. The agency also advised users to verify network names, disable automatic WiFi connections, and log out of accounts after use.

According to Kaspersky, public WiFi networks often lack proper authentication, making it easier for attackers to monitor internet traffic and capture sensitive information without users’ knowledge.

To reduce cyber risks, Kaspersky recommends avoiding financial transactions on public WiFi, using a trusted virtual private network (VPN), enabling device firewalls, activating two-factor authentication (2FA), and keeping operating systems and applications updated with the latest security patches.

The cybersecurity firm also encourages users to disable file sharing, Bluetooth, NFC, and AirDrop when not in use, avoid public USB charging stations, and use password managers to securely store credentials instead of saving them in notes or photo galleries.

For travelers, Kaspersky suggests using an eSIM with mobile data instead of relying on public WiFi, providing a more secure internet connection while abroad.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, Kaspersky said practicing good digital hygiene and using layered security measures remain essential in protecting personal information from online attacks.
