PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. have partnered with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to promote responsible electronic waste (e-waste) management across the Commission’s offices nationwide.
Under the partnership, PLDT and Smart will install “Be Kind. Recycle.” e-waste collection bins in SEC offices and conduct awareness activities to encourage employees and stakeholders to dispose of used and broken electronic devices properly.
Collected e-waste will be turned over to authorized treatment, storage, and disposal facilities to ensure proper handling and compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
The initiative forms part of the SEC’s Sustainability Week Program, supporting efforts to strengthen environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices and promote sustainability reporting.
PLDT and Smart Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to reducing the environmental impact of electronic waste and supporting the transition to a circular economy.
The companies’ “Be Kind. Recycle.” program has established more than 200 e-waste collection points nationwide through partnerships with businesses, schools, local government units, and other organizations.
Since 2023, PLDT and Smart have collected and recovered 42.5 metric tons of e-waste, preventing an estimated 17.3 metric tons of carbon emissions, according to the companies.
PLDT and Smart Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa Vergel de Dios emphasized the telecommunications group’s responsibility to help recover and properly dispose of electronic waste generated through the use of its products and services.
Smart also works with device manufacturers on initiatives involving recycled components, as well as customer trade-in and trade-up programs.
The partnership supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
