Smart Communications announced that it blocked more than 955 million scam and phishing-related text messages during the first quarter of 2026, as cybercriminals continue using advanced mobile-based fraud tactics targeting consumers.
The telecom provider also blacklisted nearly 200,000 mobile numbers connected to fraudulent activities across its network.
According to Menardo ‘Butch’ Jimenez Jr., scammers are increasingly using rogue devices that imitate legitimate cell towers to distribute phishing messages directly to nearby smartphones.
These devices, commonly referred to as IMSI catchers or fake base stations, trick mobile phones into connecting to unauthorized networks. Once connected, cybercriminals can send fraudulent text messages directly to users without passing through the telecom operator’s official messaging systems.
PLDT and Smart warned that users may notice their devices suddenly downgrading from 5G connectivity to older networks such as 2G before receiving suspicious messages — a possible indication of nearby signal hijacking activity.
The companies said fraudulent messages often create a sense of urgency by claiming account suspensions, expiring rewards, or security verification issues to pressure users into clicking malicious links.
To strengthen public awareness, Smart and its value brand TNT recently launched anti-text scam awareness videos supporting the government’s broader anti-fraud campaign.
Consumers are advised to avoid clicking links from unsolicited messages and to report suspicious texts through the Smart HULISCAM Portal, official social media channels, or the Smart hotline *888.
The initiative reflects the telecom provider’s continuing investment in network security, fraud prevention technologies, and cybersecurity awareness amid growing digital threats in the mobile ecosystem.
