Equinix has announced plans to expand its operations in Malaysia with the development of KL2, a new AI-ready data center in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur, as demand for cloud computing, AI workloads, and enterprise digital infrastructure continues to accelerate across ASEAN.
The new facility will be located near Equinix’s existing KL1 data center and represents the company’s fourth data center investment in Malaysia, alongside ongoing projects in Johor. Equinix said the expansion forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen regional connectivity and support Malaysia’s growing role as a digital and AI innovation hub.
With an investment exceeding US$190 million, KL2 is expected to deliver more than 2,200 cabinets upon full build-out and will support hyperscalers, multinational enterprises, and digital-native businesses deploying hybrid multi-cloud and Distributed AI environments.
According to Cheam Tat Inn, the expansion aligns with Malaysia’s national digital and AI ambitions, including initiatives such as the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) and the MyDIGITAL agenda.
The facility will integrate with Equinix Fabric® and Fabric Intelligence®, enabling AI-driven network optimization, advanced interconnection, and low-latency data routing across Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Singapore.
Equinix said KL2 is also engineered for next-generation AI and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads, including support for advanced liquid cooling systems designed for high-density infrastructure environments.
The company added that the data center is targeting 100% renewable energy coverage from day one, supporting its global sustainability target of achieving full renewable energy coverage across its retail IBX data center footprint by 2030.
Globally, Equinix operates more than 280 data centers across 77 markets in 36 countries, serving over 10,500 businesses worldwide.
