IBM has announced the global availability of IBM Bob, an AI-first development platform designed to streamline the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC) for enterprise teams. Positioned as more than a coding assistant, Bob integrates artificial intelligence across planning, coding, testing, deployment, and modernization—while maintaining strict governance and security controls.
As enterprises accelerate AI adoption, many face challenges from legacy systems, hybrid environments, and compliance requirements. IBM Bob addresses these complexities through a structured, agent-based framework that embeds AI into every stage of development. It introduces persona-based modes, reusable workflows, and human-in-the-loop governance to balance speed with control.
A key innovation is Bob’s AI-first SDLC orchestration, which coordinates specialized agents across development stages to reduce fragmentation and improve delivery efficiency. The platform also enables intelligent modernization—helping enterprises upgrade legacy systems faster. In one case, a Java upgrade that typically takes 30 days was completed in just three days, saving over 160 engineering hours.
Security is built directly into the workflow, with features such as prompt normalization, sensitive data scanning, and real-time policy enforcement. Additionally, Bob ensures full auditability through its CLI tool, BobShell, which documents every AI-driven action to support compliance and traceability.
IBM Bob also leverages multi-model orchestration, dynamically selecting the most suitable AI model—including Anthropic’s Claude, Mistral AI open-source models, and IBM’s Granite models—based on task complexity, cost, and performance. This approach allows enterprises to optimize outcomes without manually managing multiple AI systems.
Early adoption within IBM demonstrates significant productivity gains. Since its internal launch in June 2025, Bob has been used by over 80,000 employees, with reported productivity improvements averaging 45%. Some teams achieved up to 70% time savings on specific tasks, including code generation and system refactoring.
Major organizations are already leveraging the platform. Ernst & Young is using IBM Bob to modernize its global tax platform, while Blue Pearl and APIS IT have reported accelerated development timelines and improved accuracy in handling complex legacy systems.
Available as a SaaS solution with a 30-day free trial, IBM Bob marks a shift toward outcome-driven AI adoption. By automating routine tasks and enhancing complex workflows, the platform aims to help enterprises scale software development while maintaining governance, transparency, and efficiency.
