Maya is emphasizing the role of real-time and AI-assisted risk management as digital finance accelerates, with financial institutions facing increasingly sophisticated fraud and identity threats.

Speaking at the World Financial Innovation Series (WFIS) Philippines 2026, Julie Reyes, Maya Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, said risk management must keep pace with the speed of digital financial services, from credit assessment and identity verification to fraud detection and ongoing monitoring.

Reyes was named Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) Advocate of the Year at the WFIS Philippines Awards 2026, marking her second win in the category after receiving the recognition in 2024.

She was recognized for championing Maya’s One Maya Governance Framework, which aligns risk standards, controls, escalation paths and oversight across its banking and payments businesses while maintaining the separate governance and regulatory responsibilities of Maya Bank and Maya Philippines.

Under the framework, risk and compliance teams work with business, technology and operations teams as decisions are made. Risk expertise is also applied to areas including credit assessment, fraud management and customer protection.

Maya uses real-time and AI-assisted capabilities to identify suspicious patterns and support financial crime investigations. Its controls cover multiple stages of the customer relationship, including onboarding, authentication, account recovery, profile changes and transaction monitoring.

Reyes also identified deepfakes and other forms of impersonation and identity fraud as emerging concerns for financial institutions. She called for layered, risk-based controls and closer coordination among financial institutions, telecommunications companies, technology platforms and authorities.

The developments highlight how AI and real-time monitoring are becoming part of financial institutions’ efforts to strengthen fraud prevention, customer protection and responsible digital finance.
